Send Money from USA to India: Cheapest Providers 2026

USA to India: The World's Largest Remittance Corridor

Quick answer: the cheapest way to send money to India from the USA is a specialist provider rather than a bank — but which specialist depends on your amount, and it changes. Priced against 20 providers on 4 October 2026: Paysend leads on $200 (₹19,189), TapTap Send on $1,000 (₹96,154) and TapTap Send on $5,000 (₹481,539). Wise pays the mid-market rate net of its fee (₹95,600 on $1,000), which makes it predictable rather than automatically cheapest on this corridor. The spread between best and worst is ₹4,399 on $1,000 — that is the money at stake in choosing. Compare live USD to INR rates →

This is the most competitive corridor we track, which is exactly why a fixed recommendation ages badly here. Across our whole dataset the provider cheapest on a corridor today is not the habitual leader on about a quarter of corridors — see provider consistency — and on USD→INR the lead changes hands often enough that we quote it live rather than naming a winner.

India is the world's largest remittance recipient, receiving over $125 billion annually according to the World Bank. The USA-to-India corridor alone accounts for roughly $28 billion per year — driven by a 4.4-million-strong Indian diaspora in the United States.

The good news: intense competition between providers means you have more options than ever. The bad news: the gap between the cheapest and most expensive option on a single transfer can exceed 5% of the send amount. On a $5,000 transfer, that's $250 lost to fees and markups.

This guide covers everything you need to send money to India: provider comparisons with real data, delivery methods (IMPS, UPI, NEFT, cash pickup), IFSC code requirements, NRI account rules, tax implications, and the new 2026 US remittance tax. For broader advice, see our cheapest international transfers guide.

Wise — Best for Large Transfers ($500+)

Wise uses the real mid-market exchange rate with zero markup — the same rate you see on Google or Reuters. It charges a transparent fee (typically 0.6–0.8% for USD to INR). Wise charges no exchange-rate markup, which keeps it competitive above $500 — but the provider that actually delivered the most rupees on this corridor was Paysend, which led on 54 of the last 91 days we could compare. Delivery is via IMPS (minutes) or NEFT (2–4 hours). See our exchange rate markup guide to understand why this matters.

Pros: Best total value for $500+, transparent pricing, multi-currency account, real-time tracking
Cons: Higher upfront fee on small transfers, no cash pickup option

Remitly — Best for Speed and Small Transfers

Remitly's Express option delivers rupees to Indian bank accounts within minutes via IMPS. Fees start at $0 on many transfers, and they frequently run first-transfer promotions with boosted exchange rates. Also supports UPI delivery and cash pickup. The Wise vs Remitly comparison shows how they stack up corridor by corridor.

Pros: Fastest delivery (minutes), $0 fees available, UPI support, strong app
Cons: Exchange rate markup (0.3–0.8%), promotional rates expire

Instarem — Best Zero-Fee Option

Instarem charges zero transfer fees with a measured median markup of 0.66%. As an Asia-Pacific specialist, they have strong banking relationships in India, which means reliable delivery. Good for regular senders who want predictable pricing.

Xoom — Best for Cash Pickup Flexibility

Xoom (owned by PayPal) offers bank deposit, cash pickup, and mobile wallet delivery across India. If your recipient doesn't have a bank account, Xoom lets them collect cash at agent locations. Integration with your existing PayPal account is seamless.

Western Union — Best Cash Pickup Network

Western Union's unmatched agent network across India — including rural areas — makes it the go-to for cash pickup. Fees and markups are higher than digital-first providers, but the physical reach is unrivaled. Your recipient just needs a government ID and the MTCN (tracking number).

Why Banks Are the Most Expensive Option

US banks (Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Chase) typically charge a $25–$50 wire fee plus a 2–5% exchange rate markup. On a $1,000 transfer, that's roughly ₹3,000–₹5,000 less than Wise or Remitly. Banks also use SWIFT, which means 3–5 business days delivery and potential intermediary bank fees. Avoid banks unless you're sending very large amounts and need a formal wire receipt.

5 Delivery Methods Explained: IMPS, UPI, NEFT, Cash Pickup & Mobile Wallet

How your recipient gets the money matters as much as how much they get. India offers more delivery options than almost any other remittance destination. Here's each method, with which providers support it and when to use it.

Delivery Methods Comparison

MethodSpeedAvailabilitySupported ByBest For

IMPS (Immediate Payment Service) — The Default Choice

IMPS is India's real-time interbank payment system operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). It works 24/7/365 — including weekends and public holidays — and reaches virtually every bank account in India. This is what most international transfer providers use when they promise "delivery in minutes." You need the recipient's bank account number + IFSC code.

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) — The Emerging Option

UPI is India's massively popular mobile payment system, handling over 12 billion transactions per month. International remittances to UPI are still growing — currently Remitly and Google Pay support it. The advantage: you just need the recipient's UPI ID (like name@bank) instead of a full bank account number and IFSC code. Expect more providers to add UPI delivery in 2026.

NEFT (National Electronic Funds Transfer)

NEFT settles in batches during banking hours (approximately every 30 minutes). Delivery takes 2–4 hours and is only available Monday to Saturday. It's slightly more common for large, business-related transfers. For personal remittances, IMPS is almost always better.

Cash Pickup — For Recipients Without Bank Accounts

Western Union has the largest cash pickup network in India, followed by MoneyGram. The recipient visits an agent location, shows their government-issued ID and the tracking number (MTCN), and collects cash in rupees. This is essential for recipients in rural India who may not have bank accounts — roughly 20% of India's adult population remains unbanked.

Mobile Wallet (Paytm)

WorldRemit supports delivery to Paytm wallets. The recipient gets an instant notification and can spend the money digitally or withdraw from any Paytm-accepting merchant. Useful for younger, tech-savvy recipients who use Paytm daily for everything from groceries to utilities.

IFSC Code Guide: What You Need to Send Money to an Indian Bank Account

Unlike Europe (which uses IBAN) or the US (which uses routing numbers), India uses a combination of bank account number + IFSC code to identify recipients. Getting this wrong is the #1 cause of delayed or rejected transfers.

What Is an IFSC Code?

IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. It's an 11-character alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies a specific bank branch in India. The format is:

  • First 4 characters: Bank code (e.g., HDFC, SBIN, ICIC)
  • 5th character: Always 0 (reserved for future use)
  • Last 6 characters: Branch code

Example: HDFC0001234 means HDFC Bank, branch code 001234.

How to Find the IFSC Code

  1. Cheque book: Printed on every cheque leaf, usually near the MICR code
  2. Bank passbook or statement: Listed on the first page
  3. Net banking: Visible in account details section
  4. RBI website: The Reserve Bank of India maintains an official IFSC lookup tool
  5. Ask the recipient: They can find it in their banking app under account details

IFSC Code vs SWIFT Code — What's the Difference?

IFSC vs SWIFT: When You Need Which

Key takeaway: If you're using a specialist provider like Wise or Remitly, you need the IFSC code. If you're sending via a US bank wire, you need the SWIFT code. Most people should use IFSC (through a specialist provider) — it's faster and cheaper. For more on international codes, see our IBAN guide and SWIFT code guide.

Full Recipient Details Checklist

Gather these before starting your transfer:

  • Recipient's full name — Must match their bank account exactly
  • Bank account number — 9–18 digits depending on the bank (e.g., 50100002345678)
  • IFSC code — 11 characters identifying the branch (e.g., HDFC0001234)
  • Bank name and branch — e.g., "HDFC Bank, Andheri West Branch"
  • Purpose of remittance — Some providers ask why you're sending (family maintenance, gift, education, etc.)

What Each Provider Requires from You (Sender Requirements)

Every regulated provider must verify your identity before sending money to India. Here's what you'll need — and how requirements differ between providers.

Universal Requirements (All Providers)

  • Government-issued photo ID — US passport, driver's license, or state ID
  • Social Security Number (SSN) — Required under US anti-money laundering regulations
  • Proof of address — Usually required for first-time transfers (utility bill, bank statement)
  • US bank account or debit card — For funding the transfer

Provider-Specific Differences

Verification Requirements by Provider

ProviderID VerificationFunding MethodsMin TransferMax TransferFirst Transfer Limits
WiseID + SSN, selfieACH, wire, debit card$1$1,000,000$15,000 before enhanced verification
RemitlyID + SSNBank account, debit/credit card, Apple Pay$1$10,000/day$2,999 first transfer (Express)

Western UnionID + SSN (in-store: ID only for small amounts)Bank, debit/credit card, cash (in-store)$1$7,999 online / $5,000 in-storeLower limits until verified

How Funding Method Affects Cost

The way you pay for the transfer significantly changes the total cost:

  • ACH bank transfer (recommended): Lowest fees. Takes 1–2 days to clear, but providers like Wise and Remitly still initiate delivery immediately.
  • Debit card: Instant funding. Adds $0–$5 extra to the fee. Good for urgent transfers.
  • Credit card: Highest cost. Adds $5–$15 in fees, and your card issuer may charge a cash advance fee (typically 3–5%). Avoid unless you have no other option.

Tip: Always fund via ACH bank transfer to get the best rate. Most providers still deliver to India within minutes via IMPS, even when you fund from your bank account.

NRE vs NRO Accounts: Where Should Remittances Go?

If your recipient is an NRI (Non-Resident Indian) or if you're sending money to your own Indian account, understanding NRE and NRO accounts is critical. Sending to the wrong account type can create tax complications.

NRE Account (Non-Resident External)

  • Purpose: For parking foreign earnings in India
  • Tax status: Interest earned is 100% tax-free in India
  • Repatriation: Fully repatriable — you can send the money back abroad anytime
  • Currency: Deposits in foreign currency, maintained in INR
  • Best for: NRIs sending their own salary/savings to India

NRO Account (Non-Resident Ordinary)

  • Purpose: For income earned in India (rent, dividends, pension)
  • Tax status: Interest is taxable in India (TDS deducted at 30%+)
  • Repatriation: Limited to $1 million per financial year (after tax clearance certificate)
  • Currency: Maintained in INR
  • Best for: NRIs who earn rental income or other India-sourced income

FCNR Account (Foreign Currency Non-Resident)

  • Purpose: Fixed deposits held in foreign currency (USD, GBP, EUR, etc.)
  • Tax status: Interest is tax-free in India
  • Repatriation: Fully repatriable
  • Best for: NRIs who want to avoid INR exchange rate risk on their savings

Which account should you send to? If you're sending money to a family member's regular savings account, this section doesn't apply — just use their standard bank account + IFSC. NRE/NRO accounts matter only if the recipient is classified as an NRI by their bank, or if you're sending to your own Indian account.

Tax Rules & Reporting: What Senders and Recipients Must Know

Money transfers between the US and India trigger reporting requirements on both sides. Here's what you need to know to stay compliant.

US Side: Sender Tax Obligations

  • $10,000 reporting threshold: Transfers of $10,000+ (or multiple transfers totaling $10,000+ in 24 hours) must be reported by the provider under the Bank Secrecy Act. This is automatic — you don't file anything, but expect the provider to ask for additional documentation.
  • Gift tax: If you're sending money as a gift, the 2026 annual gift tax exclusion is $19,000 per recipient. Gifts above this must be reported (IRS Form 709), but typically no tax is owed until you exceed the lifetime exemption ($13.99 million).
  • FBAR filing: If you have authority over Indian bank accounts with a combined balance exceeding $10,000 at any point during the year, you must file an FBAR (FinCEN Form 114).

The New 2026 US Remittance Tax (1%)

Starting January 1, 2026, the US imposes a 1% excise tax on outbound remittances — but there's a critical exemption: digital transfers from bank accounts are exempt. The tax primarily targets cash-funded transfers at physical agent locations. This is another reason to use app-based providers like Wise and Remitly instead of in-store services. Read our full US remittance tax guide for details.

India Side: Recipient Obligations

  • No tax on inbound remittances: Money received from abroad is not taxable in India under current rules. This applies regardless of amount.
  • TCS (Tax Collected at Source): Only applies to outbound remittances from India — not to money coming in. Recipients don't owe TCS.
  • PAN card requirement: Banks may ask for the recipient's PAN (Permanent Account Number) for credits exceeding ₹50,000 in a single transaction.
  • Income tax on interest: If the money is deposited into an NRO account, interest earned is taxable at 30%. NRE account interest is tax-free.

Important: While the remittance itself isn't taxed in India, the recipient may need to explain the source if the total credits to their account exceed ₹10 lakh ($12,000) in a financial year and they have no corresponding income source. Keeping records of the transfer purpose (family support, gift, education) is good practice.

Transfer Limits: How Much Money Can You Send to India from the USA?

Transfer limits depend on your provider, verification level, and regulatory caps. Here's a clear breakdown.

Provider Limits

  • Wise: Up to $1,000,000 per transfer (after enhanced verification). Standard limit: $15,000 per transfer.
  • Remitly: Up to $10,000 per day, $30,000 per month (varies by verification level).
  • Western Union: $7,999 per online transfer, $5,000 per in-store transaction.
  • Xoom: $10,000 per transaction, higher limits available after extended verification.

Regulatory Limits

  • US side: No cap on how much you can send, but amounts over $10,000 trigger automatic reporting.
  • India side: No cap on inbound remittances. The RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) limit of $250,000/year only applies to money going out of India.

Sending Large Amounts ($10,000+)

For large transfers, Wise and OFX are typically the cheapest. Wise's 0% markup saves hundreds of dollars on five-figure transfers. OFX charges no transfer fee and offers competitive rates for amounts over $1,000. Both require enhanced verification (additional ID documents) for large amounts.

Tip: For property purchases or large investments in India, some providers offer forward contracts that lock in today's exchange rate for a future transfer. OFX and TorFX both offer this.

7 Tips to Get the Most Rupees for Your Dollar

  1. Compare every time you send: Provider rankings shift daily. The cheapest option last month may not be cheapest today. Use our live comparison tool before every transfer.
  2. Fund via ACH, not card: Bank transfer funding saves $3–$15 per transfer compared to debit/credit card. Worth the 1-day delay.
  3. Watch the markup, not the fee: A "$0 fee" transfer with a 2% exchange rate markup costs you $20 on a $1,000 transfer. The exchange rate markup is where most providers hide their profit.
  4. Avoid banks for remittances: US bank wires cost 3–5x more than specialist providers. The ₹3,000–₹5,000 difference on $1,000 adds up to lakhs over years of regular sending.
  5. Time your transfer (if flexible): The USD/INR rate fluctuates daily. If your transfer isn't urgent, watch the rate on our USD to INR exchange rate page and send when the rate spikes.
  6. Use loyalty programs: Remitly offers better rates for repeat customers. Wise's pricing improves with volume. Instarem's InstaPoints program gives cashback on transfers.
  7. Beware first-transfer promotions: Providers like Remitly offer boosted rates on your first transfer — great for trying them out, but check what the standard rate is before committing long-term.

The single most impactful thing you can do is switch from a bank to a specialist provider. On $500/month in remittances, the annual savings is typically $600–$1,800 — enough for a roundtrip flight to India.

Common Scenarios: Which Provider Fits Your Situation?

Sending Money for Parents' Monthly Expenses

Best option: Remitly — Set up recurring transfers with $0 fees. Express IMPS delivery means your parents see the money within minutes. For amounts under $500, Remitly's low markup makes it the best value.

Sending $5,000+ for a Property Purchase or Wedding

Best option: Wise — The 0% markup on large transfers saves ₹10,000+ compared to banks. For very large amounts ($25,000+), also consider OFX which offers no-fee transfers and personalized support.

Urgent Cash for a Family Emergency

Best option: Western Union or Xoom cash pickup — Money is available in minutes at thousands of agent locations across India. Your recipient just needs their ID and the tracking number. Yes, the markup is higher, but speed matters more in emergencies.

Student Sending Money Home from a Part-Time Job

Best option: Remitly or Instarem — Both offer $0 fees on smaller amounts ($100–$300). Remitly's app is easy to use, and Instarem's consistent pricing works well for regular small transfers.

Sending to a Recipient Without a Bank Account

Best option: Western Union cash pickup — The widest agent network in India, including Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Xoom and MoneyGram also offer cash pickup but with fewer locations.

NRI Investing in India (Property, FDs, Stocks)

Best option: Wise to NRE account — The 0% markup matters most on large, investment-grade transfers. Send to your NRE account for tax-free interest and full repatriation rights. For FDs in foreign currency, explore FCNR deposits through your Indian bank.

Send Money from USA to India: questions answered

What is the cheapest way to send money to India from the USA in 2026?
For transfers above $500, Wise is typically cheapest — it uses the real mid-market rate with 0% markup, charging a transparent fee of about 0.6–0.8%. For smaller transfers, Remitly often wins with $0 fees and a small exchange rate markup. The cheapest option varies by amount, so compare live rates at sendmoneycompare.com before every transfer.
How long does it take to send money from USA to India?
Most specialist providers deliver in minutes via IMPS (India's real-time payment system). Remitly Express, Xoom, and WorldRemit all offer near-instant delivery. Wise typically takes 1–2 business days. Bank wires via SWIFT take 3–5 business days. Cash pickup through Western Union or MoneyGram is available in minutes.
What is an IFSC code and how do I find it?
IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is an 11-character code that identifies a specific bank branch in India. Format: first 4 letters = bank code, 5th character = 0, last 6 = branch code (e.g., HDFC0001234). Find it on the recipient's cheque book, bank passbook, net banking portal, or the RBI's official IFSC lookup tool.
Do I need to pay tax on money sent to India from USA?
The remittance itself is not taxable on either side. However: (1) Gifts above $19,000 to a single recipient require IRS Form 709. (2) Transfers over $10,000 are automatically reported under the Bank Secrecy Act. (3) The new 2026 US remittance tax (1%) only applies to cash-funded transfers, not digital/bank transfers. (4) Recipients in India don't owe tax on inbound remittances.
Can I send money to a UPI ID in India from the USA?
Yes, but only through select providers. Remitly supports UPI delivery — you enter the recipient's UPI ID (like name@bank) instead of a bank account number. Google Pay also supports international UPI transfers. Expect more providers to add UPI delivery in 2026 as India's NPCI expands international UPI capabilities.
How much money can I send to India from USA per year?
There is no legal cap on how much you can send. The US requires reporting for transfers over $10,000. India's LRS (Liberalised Remittance Scheme) $250,000 annual limit only applies to outbound transfers FROM India, not money coming in. Provider limits vary: Wise allows up to $1M per transfer, Remitly up to $10,000/day.
Is Wise or Remitly better for sending money to India?
It depends on the amount. Wise is better for larger transfers ($500+) because its 0% exchange rate markup saves more money as the amount increases. Remitly is better for smaller, urgent transfers — it offers $0 fees, IMPS delivery in minutes, and UPI support. See our detailed Wise vs Remitly comparison for a full breakdown.
What's the difference between sending to an NRE and NRO account in India?
NRE (Non-Resident External) accounts are for foreign earnings — interest is tax-free and funds are fully repatriable. NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) accounts are for Indian-sourced income — interest is taxed at 30% and repatriation is limited to $1M/year. If you're sending your US salary to India, NRE is usually better. For receiving Indian rent or dividends, use NRO.
