There is no official Pakistani statistic that says "Pakistan loses $X per year because senders pick the wrong remittance channel." That loss is implicit — it is the difference between the rate a sender actually got and the best rate that was available, multiplied across tens of millions of transactions.

Pakistan is among the top global remittance recipients. Official numbers from the State Bank of Pakistan put inflows in recent years at:

Quick answer: The World Bank's global average cost for a $200 remittance is still above 6%, far above the UN SDG target of 3%. How we estimate it: Take Pakistan's annual remittance inflows ($28B), multiply by the avoidable inefficiency gap observed on live quotes (1%–3% of transfer value), and you get a national loss range of $280M (conservative) to $840M (upper bound). The midpoint — 2% — gives ~$560M per year sitting in bank spreads, agent margins, and FX desks that could otherwise be in households.
Scenario A — Conservative (1% inefficiency)
If senders collectively picked routes only 1% worse than the best available, the national loss is:
1% × $28B = $280 million/year
This assumes most senders already use a competitive fintech or wallet-based channel. Our live USD→PKR data (~2% spread) suggests this is roughly the floor.
Scenario B — Realistic blended (2% inefficiency)
2% × $28B = $560 million/year
This is consistent with a mix of: (a) senders using competitive fintech (~1% loss), (b) senders using exchange houses with mid-tier rates (~2.5%), and (c) a long tail still using bank wires or informal hawala (4%+). The €1,000 EUR→PKR spread of 4.5% and AED 1,000 spread of 7.8% confirm there is substantial room above the floor.

This reflects what happens if a meaningful share of senders default to bank wires, cash pickup at full agent rates, or non-RDA bank channels. Where Does That Lost Money Actually Go?
Three points worth being honest about:
- The "loss" doesn't vanish. It is captured by intermediaries — banks, exchange houses, agent networks, and FX desks. From Pakistan's perspective it is a transfer from migrant households to financial counterparties (mostly outside Pakistan), not an evaporation.
- Some of the gap is rational. Many senders prioritize trust, cash-pickup availability, and the recipient's preferred bank or wallet over the last 1–2% of value. A grandmother who only accepts cash from a Western Union counter is not making a mistake — she has different constraints.
- Informal channels (hawala/hundi) complicate the picture. The State Bank of Pakistan itself warned in 2025 that cuts to the Pakistan Remittance Initiative (PRI) subsidy could push flows back into informal channels, estimated at $6 billion+/year across the Arab–Pakistan route alone. Informal channels often offer market-rate FX but carry tax, AML and recipient-access trade-offs.
