A SWIFT code (also called a BIC) is an 8 or 11-character identifier used by German banks for international wire transfers. The country code portion is DE. For example, DEUTDEFF is the SWIFT code for Deutsche Bank Frankfurt. The structure is: 4 characters for the bank, 2 for country (DE), 2 for the city, and optionally 3 for the branch.
Key German bank SWIFT codes include: Deutsche Bank — DEUTDEFF, Commerzbank — COBADEFF, DZ Bank — GENODEFF, HypoVereinsbank (UniCredit) — HYVEDEMMXXX, N26 — NTSBDEB1, and ING Germany — INGBDEFF. Sparkassen and Volksbanken each have their own SWIFT codes — do not assume a generic code works for all institutions.
For EUR transfers from within the SEPA zone, the German IBAN (starting with DE, 22 characters) is usually sufficient — no SWIFT code is needed. For transfers from outside SEPA or in a non-EUR currency, you will need the bank's SWIFT/BIC code alongside the IBAN. SEPA transfers are typically faster and cheaper than SWIFT.
You can find your German bank's SWIFT code on your bank statement, in your online banking portal, by contacting your bank, or by searching on this page. Note that Sparkassen (savings banks) and Volksbanken (cooperative banks) each have their own distinct SWIFT codes — you cannot use a generic Deutsche Bank or Commerzbank code for these institutions.
SEPA EUR transfers from within Europe typically arrive within one business day (often same-day with SEPA Instant). SWIFT transfers from outside SEPA usually take one to three business days. Transfers in non-EUR currencies may take slightly longer due to correspondent bank routing and currency conversion at the receiving bank.
SEPA transfers in EUR are typically free or very low cost at German banks. Non-SEPA SWIFT transfers may incur an inbound wire fee, typically EUR 5–15. If the transfer arrives in a non-EUR currency (such as USD or GBP), the bank will convert at their own exchange rate, which includes a margin. Check your bank's Preisverzeichnis (fee schedule) for details.
German Sparkassen (savings banks) and Volksbanken (cooperative banks) are independent institutions with their own SWIFT codes, separate from commercial banks like Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank. There are hundreds of Sparkassen across Germany, each with a unique BIC. You must use the specific SWIFT code for the recipient's Sparkasse — a Deutsche Bank SWIFT code will not work for a Sparkasse account.
Some German banks (particularly Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, and international banks like HSBC Germany) offer multi-currency accounts that can hold USD, GBP, and other currencies. Standard EUR accounts will have non-EUR transfers automatically converted at the bank's exchange rate. For regular foreign currency receipts, a multi-currency account avoids this automatic conversion.
Germany is part of the SEPA zone, so euro-denominated transfers from other SEPA countries typically use IBAN alone and travel via SEPA Credit Transfer rather than SWIFT. SWIFT becomes relevant when the payment originates outside SEPA or involves a non-EUR currency. Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, and the Sparkassen network are among the most commonly used SWIFT participants for inbound international transfers.
