Revolut Foreign Transaction Fees Explained (2026)

Does Revolut Charge Foreign Transaction Fees?

Quick answer: Revolut charges no foreign transaction fees on card payments abroad in most cases — you pay at the interbank rate. But there are four hidden costs: (1) a 0.5-1% weekend markup when FX markets are closed, (2) a monthly FX limit on free exchange (£1,000 on Standard, £3,000 on Plus, £10,000 on Premium, unlimited on Metal), (3) a 1% "fair usage" fee once you exceed the limit, and (4) ATM withdrawal limits (£200/month free on Standard, then 2% fee). For pure card spending abroad on weekdays under your plan's limit, Revolut is genuinely free.

Revolut is one of the most popular money apps for travelers and expats. The "no fees" marketing is mostly true — but the details matter. Here's exactly when you pay and when you don't.

Where these figures come from. The plan limits, weekend markup and ATM thresholds below were read from Revolut's own published fee schedule and plan comparison pages, last checked in September 2026. Revolut changes these without notice and they differ by country of registration, so check the fee schedule inside your own app before relying on a number here. Trustpilot: 4.7/5 (474K reviews).

Card FX is separate from sending money, which is what we measure directly. On the Revolut transfers we price, its exchange-rate markup is 0.64% median across the 40 corridors we quote it on, its all-in cost averages 0.85% of the amount sent, and it is cheapest on 2 of the 213 corridors we can compare (how we measure that). If you are moving money to someone else's account rather than spending on card, compare it against Wise and the rest on your actual corridor.

The Weekend Markup: Revolut's Biggest Hidden Cost

Between Friday 11pm GMT and Sunday 11pm GMT, FX markets are closed. To offer exchange during this window, Revolut adds a markup to protect against rate movement:

CurrencyWeekday FeeWeekend Fee
Major currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, JPY, CHF)0%+1.0%
Non-major currencies (all others)0%+1.0%
Ruble, Ukrainian hryvnia, Thai baht+1.0% weekday+2.0%

Practical tip: If you're traveling and need to convert €500 EUR → USD:

  • Tuesday: You get ~$590 (interbank rate)
  • Saturday: You get ~$584 (1% markup = $6 lost)

Always convert on Monday-Friday. If you know you'll spend abroad on the weekend, top up your foreign currency balance during the week.

Monthly FX Limits by Plan

Every Revolut plan has a free FX limit. Exceed it, and you pay 1% "fair usage" fee on the excess:

PlanMonthly PriceFree FX LimitOver Limit
Standard (free)£0£1,000+1%
Plus£3.99£3,000+1%
Premium£7.99£10,000+0.5%
Metal£14.99Unlimited0%
Ultra£45Unlimited0%

Example: If you're on Standard and exchange £5,000 in a month:

  • First £1,000: free
  • Remaining £4,000: 1% fee = £40

If you regularly exchange over £3,000/month, Plus or Premium pays for itself.

ATM Withdrawal Fees Abroad

PlanMonthly Free ATMOver Limit
Standard£2002% (min £1)
Plus£2002% (min £1)
Premium£4002% (min £1)
Metal£8002% (min £1)

Withdrawing £500 at an ATM abroad on Standard = £200 free + £6 fee on the excess. Use card payments instead whenever possible.

Revolut vs Traditional Bank Card Abroad

Here's a real comparison. Spending £1,000 on a 2-week vacation in Spain (€, weekday):

ProviderFX MarkupCard FeeATM FeeTotal Cost
Revolut Standard0%0%0% (under £200)£0
Wise debit card0.35-0.5%0%£1.50 per ATM£3-5
Typical UK bank debit card2.99%£1 per transaction£4 + 2.99%£35-50
Typical UK credit card2.99%0%5% cash advance£30-40

Verdict: For under £1,000/month of FX and weekday usage, Revolut Standard is genuinely the cheapest option for travelers. Wise is a close second and often cleaner for business use.

How to Use Revolut Abroad Without Fees

  1. Convert on weekdays. Never top up foreign currency Friday night to Sunday night. The 1% weekend markup eats your savings.
  2. Know your plan's FX limit. Standard = £1,000/month. If you're exchanging more, upgrade to Plus (£3,000 for £3.99/month) — it pays for itself at £400+ of overage.
  3. Use card payments, not ATMs. Card spending is unlimited free. ATM withdrawals are capped.
  4. Top up in bulk. If you know you're traveling for 2 weeks in Japan, convert £1,000 to JPY on a Wednesday before the trip. Spend from the JPY balance on the card.
  5. Check the actual rate. In the app, tap the currency pair and verify the rate matches Google's. If it's more than 0.3% off, you're on weekend pricing.
  6. Avoid DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion). If an ATM or card terminal asks "Do you want to pay in GBP or EUR?" — always choose the local currency (EUR). If you choose GBP, the merchant converts at a terrible rate.

Revolut vs Wise: Which Is Better for International Fees?

Both are excellent, but they're optimized for different use cases:

  • Revolut wins for: Travel card spending, multi-currency wallet holding, digital nomads, anyone in Europe
  • Wise wins for: Large transfers, transparent mid-market rate (no weekend markup ever), business payments, holding USD with a real US routing number

Revolut Foreign Transaction Fees Explained: questions answered

Does Revolut charge foreign transaction fees on card payments?
No, not in most cases. Card payments abroad in supported currencies have 0% FX markup on weekdays, up to your plan's monthly limit (£1,000 on Standard). The main exceptions are: 1% weekend markup (Friday 11pm - Sunday 11pm GMT), 1% fair usage fee over your plan limit, and ATM fees above £200/month.
When does Revolut apply the weekend markup?
From Friday 11pm GMT to Sunday 11pm GMT, Revolut adds a 1% markup on major currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, etc.) and 2% on exotic currencies like RUB and THB. This covers the risk from FX markets being closed. Always convert on weekdays.
What is the monthly FX limit on Revolut?
Standard: £1,000/month. Plus: £3,000. Premium: £10,000. Metal: unlimited. Over the limit, Standard/Plus users pay 1% fair usage fee; Premium pays 0.5%. Metal and Ultra have no limits.
Is Revolut cheaper than Wise for card spending abroad?
For travel card spending on weekdays under £1,000/month, Revolut Standard is marginally cheaper (0% vs Wise 0.35-0.5%). Above that threshold, or for weekend use, Wise becomes cheaper. For transfers (not card spending), Wise is almost always cheaper thanks to the mid-market rate with no weekend markup.
How much can I withdraw from ATMs with Revolut Standard?
£200/month at 0% fee. Over that, 2% fee (minimum £1). Premium increases this to £400/month and Metal to £800/month. For ATM-heavy usage, Metal pays for itself at ~£1,500/month of ATM withdrawals.
What is DCC and why should I avoid it?
DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion) is when an ATM or card terminal asks 'Do you want to pay in your home currency or the local currency?' Always choose the LOCAL currency. If you choose your home currency, the merchant applies a terrible exchange rate (typically 3-8% worse) on top of any other fees. Let Revolut handle the conversion at its much better rate.
