India Transfer Checklist: Currency, Recipient Details, Purpose

Begin with the sending country and the rupee obligation

There is no single India price. An offer to a sender in Canada is a different product from an offer to someone in Britain, even if both payments reach the same Indian account. Select your origin, funding method and amount before using a provider ranking.

This destination guide helps you organise an INR payment. The individual UK, Canada and US guides cover their sending-side choices. Decide whether your aim is to spend a fixed local budget or deliver an exact rupee amount: the inputs differ.

For family support, agree the amount and expected credit date with the recipient. For an invoice, obtain the payee's formal bank instructions and payment reference. The fact that two transfers both go to India does not make their purpose, eligibility or required documentation identical.

Compare an offer in its own source currency

A current USD example

Our collected offers for $1,000 on the US-to-India route, dated 26 October 2026, include:

  • InstaReM: $0.00 fee, 0.15% markup — recipient gets ₹95,024
  • Xoom (PayPal): $0.00 fee, 0.18% markup — recipient gets ₹94,995
  • Remitly: $0.00 fee, 0.27% markup — recipient gets ₹94,910
  • Wise: $6.85 fee, 0% markup — recipient gets ₹94,552

That list does not rank GBP, CAD or AUD transfers. Start a separate quote on the GBP→INR or CAD→INR route if that is the currency you fund with.

Two siblings sharing a ₹30,000 expense

Imagine each sibling agrees to deliver ₹15,000, one from Canada and one from the US. Using invented rates of ₹60 per CAD and ₹90 per USD, the principals would be C$250 and US$166.67 before fees and provider rounding. Those dollar figures cannot be compared directly: they are different currencies.

The Canadian sender should compare the total Canadian-dollar cost of delivering ₹15,000 across eligible CAD offers. The US sender should independently compare the US-dollar cost for the same rupee target. Neither should choose a company simply because the other sibling's number looks smaller.

When both transfers arrive, reconcile the two credits to the agreed ₹30,000 obligation. If one service deducted a fee from the amount converted instead of adding it to the debit, that sender may have purchased a smaller payout than intended. Using the exact recipient-amount field, where available, makes this difference visible before payment.

Build a beneficiary record for the account you intend to pay

Ask the recipient for their current bank-issued account details before creating a saved beneficiary. Enter the account holder's name, account number and IFSC in the separate fields the provider requests. Do not paste an account number into the branch-code field or assume a code saved for another family member belongs to this account.

NPCI's description of IMPS inward remittances identifies the account number and IFSC as the routing details for that domestic payout leg. Those details should come from the receiving account's instructions. A sample code in an explanatory article is not a payment instruction for your beneficiary.

If a parent changes branches or asks you to use a different account, confirm the new record before sending a recurring allowance. Label saved beneficiaries so you can distinguish, for example, a parent's household account from the account used for a tuition invoice. Review the displayed recipient once more on the final confirmation; selecting a familiar bank name alone does not identify the intended account.

Delivery Options and Speed

  • Bank deposit: Most common. 1–2 business days (Wise), minutes to 1 day (Remitly Express), instant (some UPI-enabled services)
  • UPI/mobile wallet: Instant delivery to UPI IDs. Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm are supported by some providers.
  • Cash pickup: Available via Western Union and MoneyGram at agent locations across India. Usually ready within minutes.

Bank deposits to major banks (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis) are processed faster than smaller regional banks.

Document the purpose rather than borrowing another sender’s tax answer

A destination guide cannot settle the tax treatment for a sender in every country and a recipient in every circumstance. Before making a substantial payment, record what it is: a family gift, repayment, payment for services or a movement between your own accounts. Keep the relevant invoice, agreement or explanation with the receipt.

If you seek tax advice, give the adviser the relationship between sender and recipient, where each is resident, the payment purpose and any related transfers. A rule discussed in a US sending guide should not automatically be carried into a Canadian or UK payment. Likewise, information about taking money out of India is not an explanation of receiving it there.

Bank and provider checks are another question. Supply the requested purpose and source-of-funds information accurately through the official service. If a transfer is held for review, use its reference when contacting support; changing the description to obtain a faster payout can make the record harder to explain.

What this destination guide measures

The USD list above is generated from our quote records for that exact currency pair and amount. It is a snapshot of the providers shown, with collection and ranking limits described in our methodology. It is not evidence that the same ordering holds in another sending country.

The siblings' shared-expense calculation is hypothetical. Its purpose is to keep CAD, USD and INR amounts separate and show how to reconcile a fixed rupee obligation. For Indian bank payout details, NPCI's inward-remittance explanation describes using an account number and IFSC through an authorised provider for the IMPS domestic leg.
