Slovakia IBAN questions

Can every Slovak bank receive an instant euro payment?

Yes. NBS says all banks in Slovakia have been part of the instant payment system since 9 January 2025, the EU deadline for receiving, with 9 October 2025 the latest date for sending. Slovenská sporiteľňa, VÚB and Tatra banka joined voluntarily before that. Banks had to receive and send within a 10-second limit.

What is the constant symbol on a Slovak public-sector bill?

A code of up to four digits classifying what a payment is for, used mostly by public bodies, according to the Slovak Banking Association. It comes last in the reference: /VS012345/SS/KS0308 when no specific symbol is used.

How do koruna amounts on old documents convert?

At €1 = SKK 30.1260, the fixed rate at which the euro replaced the koruna, as the ECB records. A contract showing 10,000 koruna corresponds to €331.94.

Slovak payment symbols, SIPS and instant euro transfers

Slovakia has used the euro since 1 January 2009. Národná banka Slovenska (NBS) operates SIPS, a retail system that processes customers' SEPA payments, connects to the STEP2 platform and settles through participants' accounts in TARGET. Instant payments went elsewhere: NBS chose not to build them into SIPS and provides settlement through the Eurosystem's TIPS instead.

  • A Slovak invoice may quote a variabilný symbol (variable symbol), a number of up to ten digits the payee uses to match a payment to a contract, customer or bill. The Slovak Banking Association's SEPA convention carries it in the end-to-end reference as /VS and the number, then /SS and /KS for the specific and constant symbols.
  • Paying from abroad, type the variable symbol into the field your bank calls the payer's or end-to-end reference. The association's rules say the symbols must pass from payer to payee intact.
  • A QR code marked PAY by square on a Slovak bill follows a standard the association built with its member banks to turn a printed document into a payment order. If an app abroad cannot read it, copy the IBAN and variable symbol from the bill.
