Lithuania IBAN questions

What can the Lithuanian payee check verify?

The Verification of Payee service the Bank of Lithuania runs through CENTROlink can test the payee's name or identification number against the account before the money leaves. It has been offered since October 2025, the deadline the EU Instant Payments Regulation gave European payment providers.

Can a company in another EU country refuse to pay my LT IBAN?

Not because the account is Lithuanian. Under Article 9 of Regulation (EU) No 260/2012, a payer sending a credit transfer to a payment account located in the Union must not specify the member state where that account is held, provided the account is reachable. A business collecting from you by direct debit is bound in the same way.

How do I convert an old price in litas?

Divide by 3.45280, the fixed rate at which the euro replaced the litas on 1 January 2015, as the ECB records. A 500-litas sum from an old contract is €144.81.

Lithuania's CENTROlink: a central-bank gateway to SEPA

Lithuania's central bank, Lietuvos bankas, runs its own retail payment system, CENTROlink, as a gateway to the Single Euro Payments Area. It gives technical access to SEPA to every type of payment service provider licensed in the European Economic Area: banks, specialised banks, credit unions, and electronic money or payment institutions.

  • Many institutions reached through CENTROlink are not banks: at the end of 2024 the Bank of Lithuania listed 91 electronic money institutions and 26 payment institutions among its 117 addressable participants, licensed in Lithuania and other European countries.
  • CENTROlink took SEPA instant payments from 21 November 2017, in the scheme's first wave. The Bank of Lithuania says instant payments have driven most of its growth since 2020 and made up over two-thirds of the payments it handled in 2025.
  • Through the Bank of Lithuania's Proxy Lookup Service a payee can be paid by phone number, once they have agreed in their provider's app to link that number to an IBAN of their choice.
