Liechtenstein IBAN questions

How many banks does the FMA supervise in Liechtenstein?

The FMA's overview of supervised firms counted 11 banks on 30 June 2025, as at the end of 2024 and one fewer than in 2021 and 2022. The same table lists three electronic money institutions, one payment institution and one postal institution. The FMA is the authority that can confirm a Liechtenstein institution's licence.

Does the Swiss QR-bill work for payments to Liechtenstein?

Yes. The QR-bill, introduced on 30 June 2020, modernised payment services in Switzerland and Liechtenstein together, and the Liechtenstein Bankers Association says banks updated their systems to process it. Its printed QR code holds all the information needed to pay and book the invoice, so account and reference numbers no longer have to be typed in.

Which Swiss rules apply in Liechtenstein because of the franc?

Besides making the franc the official tender, the 1980 Currency Treaty made certain Swiss legal and administrative rules applicable in Liechtenstein; the FMA points to the treaty's annexes for them. The treaty is updated and adjusted regularly. Liechtenstein banks and investment undertakings also have reporting duties to the SNB on monetary and currency policy grounds.

Liechtenstein: Swiss francs, Swiss clearing and EEA payment law

Liechtenstein shares Switzerland's money and its central bank. The Currency Treaty with Switzerland of 1980 made the Swiss franc the legal tender of Liechtenstein, and the Swiss National Bank (SNB) serves as its central bank, the Liechtenstein Bankers Association explains on its payments page. Supervision stays at home: every financial services provider licensed in Liechtenstein falls exclusively under the Financial Market Authority (FMA) in Vaduz, not under the SNB or any Swiss supervisor.

  • Membership of the European Economic Area since 1995 pulls the other way: as an EEA state, Liechtenstein must implement and apply EU law on payment services. The EPC's list (version 8.0, December 2025) accordingly counts it among the EU and EEA countries in SEPA, with CHF as its currency code, while Switzerland appears among the non-EEA members.
  • Franc payments run on Swiss infrastructure. The SIC system, operated by SIX Interbank Clearing for the SNB, settles Swiss franc payments through an RTGS service and an instant payments service. Under SNB admission rules updated on 27 February 2025, Liechtenstein participants count as domestic if they contribute significantly to the SNB's tasks and pose no major risks.
  • Liechtensteinische Landesbank (LLB) says instant payments on the SIC5 platform have been available in Switzerland and Liechtenstein since August 2024. According to LLB, the largest banks joined first and the rest are being connected in stages, with completion expected by 2026, so a recipient may want to ask whether their bank already takes them.
