Greenland IBAN questions

Why is Greenland outside SEPA when Denmark is in it?

SEPA covers EU and EEA countries plus other countries and territories the European Payments Council has admitted, and Greenland is in none of those groups. Since leaving the European Community in 1985 it has been an overseas country and territory with association agreements. The EPC's current SEPA list, dated December 2025, includes Denmark but not Greenland.

Is Grønlandsbanken the only bank in Greenland?

No. The Faroese bank Føroya Banki says it serves personal and corporate customers in Greenland too, having bought two branches there from Sparbank in 2010. Grønlandsbanken is by far the larger: Finanstilsynet's 2026 SIFI review puts it at 86.3% of deposits and 83.4% of lending among banks in Greenland in 2025.

Does Greenland have its own banknotes, as the Faroe Islands do?

No. Danmarks Nationalbank produces a separate series for the Faroe Islands, but it says Greenland, also part of the Danish Realm, has no series of its own and uses Danish banknotes. There is no Greenlandic currency to convert into: money sent to an account in Greenland is credited in Danish kroner.

Greenland: Danish kroner, Danish supervision, outside the EU

Greenland is part of the Danish Realm and uses the Danish krone, but its place in Europe differs from Denmark's. It joined the European Community with Denmark in 1973, before it had home rule of its own, gained home rule in 1979, and left the Community on 1 February 1985 after an advisory referendum, the Danish Parliament's EU Information Centre notes. Today Greenland belongs to neither the EU nor the European Economic Area.

  • Banks in Greenland are supervised from Copenhagen. Finanstilsynet, the Danish FSA, applies a Greenland edition of the Financial Business Act, in force by royal decree no. 1688 of December 2015, and names the territory's systemically important institutions every year. Its 2026 designation covers one bank, Grønlandsbanken, which must hold an extra capital buffer in core equity.
  • Greenland may take over financial regulation under its Self-Government Act (list II, item 25), but has not. Replying to a proposal in Inatsisartut on 12 November 2024, the Naalakkersuisut said a takeover would need a new supervisor like Finanstilsynet, and that the EU would then treat Greenland as a third country, with potentially significant approval and IT costs.
  • Grønlandsbanken describes itself as a full-service credit institution. It says it has co-owned BEC, the bankers' IT centre in Roskilde, since 1981, works with Nets on payment services, lets its AKILIUT card be used in Danish cash machines, and helps maintain payment services where a branch has no commercial basis, in collaboration with the Self-Government.
