Can I pay using only the bank letters in a Bulgarian IBAN?
No. The bank identifier does not identify the beneficiary’s individual account. Use all 22 characters supplied by the recipient’s bank.
Does a valid BG checksum confirm my supplier?
No. It checks the number’s structure, not the identity or legitimacy of the person requesting payment. Confirm a changed supplier account through an established contact.
Did Bulgarian IBANs change when the euro arrived?
No. When the euro replaced the lev on 1 January 2026, banks converted balances at 1.95583 leva per euro and kept the account numbers. Send euros to the same BG IBAN, and treat a message announcing a ‘new euro IBAN’ for an existing supplier as something to confirm by phone.
How can I tell which bank a BG IBAN belongs to?
Read characters five to eight. They are the first four letters of the bank’s BIC: UNCR is UniCredit Bulbank, STSA is DSK Bank, FINV is First Investment Bank and UBBS is United Bulgarian Bank. They name the bank only; the eight characters at the end identify the account.
How do I convert leva on an old Bulgarian invoice?
Divide by the fixed rate, 1.95583: 1,000 leva is €511.29 and 250 leva is €127.82. Bulgarian accounts now hold euros, so ask the supplier for a reissued euro invoice if the rounding matters.
Check the Bulgarian account, not just the BG prefix
A Bulgarian IBAN has 22 characters. The four-letter bank identifier within it is only one part of the receiving instruction: the rest identifies the account. Two accounts at the same institution therefore cannot be substituted for one another.
- Keep the letters and leading zeros when copying a BG account from the bank-issued record. Grouping spaces can be removed for an electronic form; account characters cannot.
- For a Bulgarian invoice, reconcile the beneficiary name and full IBAN with the supplier’s confirmed instructions. A successful format check does not establish that the supplier owns the account.
- Bulgaria joined the euro area on 1 January 2026 at a fixed 1.95583 leva per euro. Banks converted lev balances to euros and kept existing account numbers, so a BG IBAN issued before the changeover still receives payments; an amount on an older invoice converts at that rate (1,000 leva is €511.29).
- The four letters after the check digits repeat the start of the bank’s BIC: UNCR for UniCredit Bulbank (UNCRBGSF), STSA for DSK Bank (STSABGSF), whose code still reflects its former name, State Savings Bank, and BNBG, as in the registry example, for the Bulgarian National Bank (BNBGBGSF), which also supervises the country’s banks.
