Can money sent from abroad arrive through MIA?

MIA is domestic: the NBM describes it as moving lei between financial accounts in the Republic of Moldova. A payment from another country reaches a Moldovan IBAN by another route, such as a SEPA credit transfer in euros to a participating bank. Once there, MIA's Me2Me function moves money between the holder's own accounts.

How much euro traffic runs between Moldova and SEPA countries?

The NBM counted about 830,000 euro transactions between Moldova and SEPA countries in 2024, worth 11.8 billion euros, or more than 3,200 payments a day. It also noted that over 60% of Moldova's exports go to the EU. Since October 2025 such payments can run under the SEPA schemes when both banks participate.

Does SEPA cover payments in Moldovan lei?

No. The NBM describes SEPA as the European framework for euro transfers, so a transfer in lei is not a SEPA payment even between two participating banks. Although the EPC records MDL as Moldova's currency, the schemes Moldovan banks joined in 2025 carry euros only. Lei sent from abroad use other channels; lei payments inside Moldova can use MIA.

Moldova: lei through MIA at home, euros through SEPA since 2025

Moldova's currency is the Moldovan leu, listed as MDL in the EPC's register of SEPA countries. Since 12 March 2024 lei can move between accounts at Moldovan institutions through MIA, an instant payments system developed by the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), with the recipient's phone number, as registered with their bank or payment institution, as the only identifier. Ten banks and four payment institutions had integrated the system by launch day.

The euro side took about 20 months. The NBM says Moldova applied to the European Payments Council on 30 January 2024, the EPC approved its inclusion in SEPA's geographical scope on 6 March 2025, and the country became an operational part of SEPA on 6 October 2025, a process the NBM coordinated and implemented.
At go-live eight Moldovan commercial banks held SEPA participant status, the NBM said, with the Moldovan Banks Association acting as National Accession Support Organization; other payment service providers, including non-bank operators, may follow. The NBM tells customers to ask their own bank about its SEPA terms and whether it offers standard or instant euro payments.
The EPC's list sets out which Moldovan institutions are deemed automatically eligible to adhere: payment service providers incorporated in Moldova and licensed by the NBM under Law No. 114 of 18 May 2012, or, for banks, under Law No. 202 of 6 October 2017. Institutions outside those categories cannot rely on that route.
