4.3Xe and Western Union can both offer cash collection, depending on the route. Start with the exact pickup location the recipient can reach. A Western Union office is not automatically an Xe collection partner, and a quote for bank credit is not a cash quote.

Ask the recipient to identify a workable collection point for each offer. Then compare the amount available there, opening hours and required identification. Keep travel costs separate from the transfer fee: a slightly larger payout across town may be less useful than a nearby collection.
Xe registers senders in set countries; Western Union uses partners
Xe contracts through companies of its own and accepts senders only from countries on its registration list: most EU member states, the UK, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man, together with the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Xe says South African users are sent to register with its sister company, Ria Money Transfer. In Canada, for example, Xe's consumer terms name Xe Corporation, of Newmarket, Ontario, registered with FINTRAC as a money services business (C100000469) and holding a Revenu Québec licence. Ontario law governs those terms. For a claim under CAD 10,000 either side may choose arbitration without a hearing, conducted by phone, online or in writing; other claims go to a single arbitrator in Toronto under Ontario's Arbitration Act, with no appeal and no class claims.
Western Union's international terms are with a licensed Western Union subsidiary, or a licensed partner, representative or agent, in the country you send from, named in a country appendix or on your receipt. In some places the company also depends on how you send. In most EU countries, a transfer made anywhere other than its website or app, such as at an agent location, is with Western Union Payment Services Ireland Limited, on the Central Bank of Ireland's register (C55075), and unresolved complaints go to Ireland's Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman. A transfer made on the Western Union website or app is with Western Union International Bank GmbH, working with Western Union International Limited, under Austria's Financial Market Authority, and complaints go to the Joint Conciliation Board of the Austrian Banking Industry. For many other countries the appendix names only a network of licensed and authorised partners.
XE Money Transfer vs Western Union: your questions
Is money I send to Xe in Canada safeguarded?
Only while Xe holds it at rest. Xe's Canadian consumer terms say funds kept for future use or transfer are safeguarded, in segregated accounts or by insurance or guarantees, under the Retail Payment Activities Act. Funds sent with immediate transfer instructions are not, because they are in transit, and neither are funds held as security against a contract, held back for legal or compliance reasons, or held until cleared to prevent chargebacks. Xe says you can ask at any time about the safeguarding status of your money.
How do I pay Xe from a Canadian bank account?
Xe describes several methods, including these two. For Bill Payment, choose Wire Transfer when booking, then add Xe Corporation Inc. as a payee in online banking (some banks still list HiFX Canada Inc.) and quote your contract number; Xe says it buys the currency when you confirm, so a confirmed transfer is unlikely to be cancellable. For Interac e-Transfer, pay in Canadian dollars from a participating bank to the Interac email for your account's region, for example InteracCA@xe.com; Xe's account accepts auto-deposit, so no security question is needed.
Can Western Union text my receiver about the transfer?
Where it is available. Western Union's terms say SMS notifications may tell you or your receiver important details of a transfer, sent to the mobile numbers given when the transfer was made. Any charge from a mobile network operator for those messages falls on the sender or the receiver, not Western Union. The same terms list a Telephone Money Transfer service, started by calling a designated number and speaking to a customer service representative or an automated system, alongside agent locations, the website and the app.
