Quote the payment, not the currency screen
Enter the beneficiary currency, funding method and amount in the actual sending flow. Save the final debit and credit from both services. If you already hold the destination currency in Revolut, compare sending that balance with the equivalent funded Xe transfer; do not silently compare a conversion-inclusive route with a conversion-free one.
Xe's send rate and FX contracts versus Revolut's in-app exchange
Xe keeps the rate it publishes apart from the rate it deals at. Its help centre calls the mid-market rate, which its currency converter, charts and rate alerts use, a reference rate that is not usually the rate individuals receive. A transfer is priced at Xe's send rate instead, which includes a margin that Xe says varies with the size of the transfer, the currencies being exchanged and market conditions; the margin forms part of Xe's return for carrying out the exchange. Rates are live, so the send rate can move while you set up a transfer, and Xe says it will show you the updated figure before you confirm.
Revolut's UK personal terms describe an exchange made inside the account. The rate used is the one set out on its Fees Page, the live rate can be seen in the app, and once a conversion is done the transaction history shows the rate applied. The terms warn that the rate may change between your instruction and the conversion, so you may receive a little more or less than expected, that Revolut is not responsible for losses from a currency exchange, and that an exchange cannot be cancelled once made.
The companies behind each service are also regulated differently. According to Xe's UK regulatory information, its UK service is provided by HiFX Europe Limited, trading as Xe, which the FCA authorises under the Payment Services Regulations 2017 (registration 462444), while EU customers deal with Xe Europe B.V. in Amsterdam, licensed as a payment services provider by De Nederlandsche Bank (licence R149006). Revolut's UK personal terms are with Revolut Ltd, an e-money issuer authorised by the FCA, firm reference 900562, under the 2011 Electronic Money Regulations.
XE Money Transfer vs Revolut: your questions
Can I fix an Xe exchange rate for a future date?
Yes. Xe offers forward contracts: you agree a rate now for money sent on a date you choose, which can be months ahead, and Xe sends it automatically on that date. Some customers can book one themselves by changing the value date online; others contact Xe. Xe also takes limit orders, booked under Market Orders in your Xe.com account, where you enter the exchange rate you want and add a recipient now or later.
Do Xe and Revolut pay into mobile wallets?
Both offer it. Xe lists mobile wallets as a delivery option for customers in Australia, Canada, Europe, New Zealand, the UK and the US, sending to named wallets such as bKash and Nagad in Bangladesh, and says a mobile wallet transfer cannot be cancelled once confirmed. Revolut's UK personal terms say a wallet payment needs no bank details: the recipient is identified by the phone number or email linked to their wallet, and you provide a wallet identifier and payment information.
Which Xe company serves customers in Europe outside the EU?
It depends on the place. Xe's terms finder puts Norway, Guernsey, French Polynesia and New Caledonia under its European terms, while the Isle of Man and Jersey fall under its UK terms. Switzerland is handled separately: Xe says Swiss customers' accounts are provided by Ria Financial Services GmbH, a Euronet sister company that holds the required Swiss licence and is supervised by the self-regulatory organisation VQF, and that the Xe app and website work as normal.
